Nick D’Aloisio Shares Insights into Mobile Success at IAB Leadership Meeting

Yahoo’s Patrick Albano and James Deaker receive IAB awards for advertising leadership.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) held its Annual Leadership Meeting this week in Palm Desert, Calif. The three day-event, titled “Marketing 2020: The Digital Agenda,” gathered more than 1,000 industry leaders in marketing, media, and technology to share their views on how to solve major challenges in digital advertising. The IAB is a perfect group to tackle those challenges, since it’s made up of more than 600 leading companies that sell 86% of the online advertising in the U.S.

Nick D’Aloisio, Yahoo product manager and founder of Summly, delivered the opening-day keynote on mobile content and the user experience. As part of Yahoo’s mobile engineering team, D’Aloisio is imagining new ways that Summly’s text-summarization technology can help people easily discover and share news. One example is Yahoo News Digest, a new mobile app launched at CES that provides a definitive summary of all the need-to-know news twice each day.

During D’Aloisio’s presentation, he highlighted the importance of providing value to mobile users through simplified, effortless product experiences. The key to a successful mobile product is focusing on reliance and regularity -- what mobile users need and use every day -- with the goal of creating a new mobile daily habit. “There’s no point in designing a mobile experience if you don’t have in mind a daily habit,” he said.

Additionally, a highlight of the event was the IAB’s Service Excellence Awards, which go to individuals who have shown outstanding leadership and exceptional contributions to key IAB initiatives over the last year. We’re honored that two Yahoo executives received awards this year:

  • Patrick Albano, Yahoo Vice President of Sales for Mobile, Social & Innovation, was recognized along with Dan Greenberg, Co-Founder and CEO of Sharethrough, for their leadership in creating the “IAB Native Advertising Handbook.”
  • James Deaker, Yahoo Vice President of Revenue Management, Privacy and Policy, was honored for being the driving force behind the IAB’s “Data Primer 2.0.”
